Hot Buttered Rum

How to Make Hot Buttered Rum

Prep time: 5 minutes

Serves: 1

Ingredients

  • 2 oz dark rum (Mount Gay Black Barrel or Myers’s)
  • 1 tbsp hot buttered rum batter (see notes)
  • 6 oz hot water or hot apple cider
  • Whole cinnamon stick and star anise (garnish)

Instructions

  1. Warm a mug by filling it with hot water for 1 minute, then discard.
  2. Add the hot buttered rum batter to the warm mug.
  3. Pour in rum and stir to melt the batter.
  4. Top with hot water or hot cider. Stir again until fully combined and smooth.
  5. Garnish with a cinnamon stick and star anise.

Notes

Batter: Beat together ½ cup softened unsalted butter + ½ cup brown sugar + 1 tsp cinnamon + ½ tsp nutmeg + ¼ tsp cloves + pinch of salt. Store in the freezer for up to 1 month, scoop as needed.

Cider version: Using hot apple cider instead of water adds a bright fruit note that cuts the richness of the butter beautifully.
