How to Make A Gin & Tonic

Gin & Tonic, the first cocktail I ever learned… in an apartment in Brno, Czech Republic. When I make a G&T I always go with Castle and Key’s Roots of Ruin.

Prep time: 4 minutes

Serves: 1

Ingredients

  • 2 oz Gin
  • 4 oz Tonic water (chilled)
  • 1 Lime, Fresh lime juice (optional, but highly recommended)
  • Ice
  • Garnish: Fresh lime wheel and a sprig of mint or rosemary.

Instructions

  1. First Lime: Cut the lime in half. Juice the first half into the bottom of the glass.
  2. Chill: Fill a highball or balloon glass with large, fresh ice cubes.
  3. Combine: Add the gin and the rest of the limes juice (if using) to the glass.
  4. Mix: Stir gently for a few seconds to chill the spirit.
  5. Finish: Top with the chilled tonic water, pouring slowly down the side of the glass, and give one final gentle stir.
  6. Garnish: Drop in a fresh lime wheel and add a herb sprig for an aromatic finish.

Notes

Carbonation is key: Always use a fresh, small-format bottle of tonic rather than a large liter bottle to ensure maximum fizz.

The “Spanish” Gin-Tonic: For a more aromatic experience, use a wide-bulbed wine glass to trap the scents of the botanicals and garnishes.

Proportions: If you prefer a lighter drink, increase the tonic to 6 oz to lower the alcohol-to-mixer ratio without losing the flavor.

Gin Type: I love Roots of Ruin, but go with your favorite!
