4th Of July Cocktails: How to Make a Star-Spangled Sour

Ingredients

  • Bottom Layer: ½ oz Grenadine (or Raspberry Syrup)
  • Middle Layer: 1 ½ oz Silver Tequila or Vodka mixed with ¾ oz Fresh Lime Juice
  • Top Layer: ¾ oz Blue Curaçao
  • Garnish: A single large blueberry and a small mint leaf

Instructions

  1. The Base: Pour the grenadine into the bottom of a chilled coupe or martini glass. This creates the heavy red foundation.
  2. The Middle: In a separate mixing glass, stir your spirit (Tequila or Vodka) with the lime juice. Very slowly pour this mixture over the back of a bar spoon onto the grenadine. If done gently, the clear citrus mix will sit on top of the red syrup.
  3. The Float: Finally, slowly pour the Blue Curaçao over the back of the bar spoon. It will naturally settle between or slightly above the citrus layer, creating a distinct blue horizon.
  4. Garnish: Carefully place a skewered blueberry in and tuck a mint leaf next to it for a final touch of contrast.

Notes

Service: Serve with a small cocktail pick so guests can stir the layers themselves after enjoying the visual presentation.
Spoon Trick: To achieve clean layers, the back of the spoon should be just touching the surface of the previous liquid layer. Pour at a trickle pace.
Temperature: Chilling all ingredients beforehand, including the glass, helps the layers stay distinct and prevents the sugars from bleeding together too quickly.
